Our Worship
Our Monthly Service Plan will tell you of our forthcoming services.
Our worship services are of three main types:
Our main Sunday service is at 10:30am and lasts for about one hour. There are refreshments served in the Hall in the lower level after this service. The services follow a monthly cycle with two or three Morning Services , one Holy Communion and one All-age Worship in each four or five Sunday month respectively. There is one evening service a month which is Holy Communion and is usually on the same Sunday as the All-age service in the morning.
‘Morning Service’ refers to the traditional Methodist act of worship that includes prayers (both formal and spontaneous), hymns (usually about five chosen from both traditional and modern sources) and a sermon (of about 20 minutes duration in which the Bible and church traditions are related to everyday reason and experience). There may be variations on this pattern at the discretion of the leader of worship. He or she will be either a minister or a local preacher in the Bath Methodist Circuit. Occasionally we are pleased to welcome accredited leaders of worship from other denominations.
The ‘Holy Communion’ is usually a more formal service using material from the recent ‘Methodist Worship Book’ The service is always led by an ordained minister during which bread and (non-alcoholic) wine is shared with all who in good conscience and good standing with their particular denomination, so wish. That includes children with whom communion has been discussed by either a parent or junior church leader. Alternatively anyone may come forward and receive a blessing from the minister who leads the service.
Footnote: In Methodist the word ‘minister’ refers to either a presbyter (equivalent to priest) and deacon. Retired Presbyters are called Supernumeraries).
